Postdoctoral Fellowships in Biomedical Informatics (degree-granting) The Department of Biomedical Informatic is pleased to offer two post-doctoral fellowships programs. The degree-granting fellowship is for individuals who wish to add informatics training to their prior doctoral work, generally in one of the health professions (medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, etc.) This program leads to a master's or PhD degree. The non-degree fellowship is a traditional postdoctoral training program in which individuals who have earned doctoral degrees in biomedical informatics or a closely related field obtained additional specialized research training with a faculty member in our department. Not all individuals who seek postdoctoral fellowship training have previously completed a doctoral degree in biomedical informatics. For example, individuals with a doctorate in one of the health professions are oftern interested in obtaining informatics training through postdoctoral fellowships. Also, some individuals with prior PhD or DSc training in other fields seek to obtain informatics fellowship training to complement the training they have received in their primary discipline. When candidates in these categories apply for a postdoctoral fellowship position, they will also be asked to apply for a master's or PhD in our graduate program (see description of degree programs and information on graduate admissions for details of application logistics). They need not establish a prior relationship with a specific faculty member. All applicants to this program must be eligible for support from our National Library of Medicine training grant. If accepted, they will be supported as postdoctoral fellows while working toward their MA or PhD degrees. Individuals who have prior doctoral training but who are ineligible for NLM training grant positions may apply but must be supported by a particular faculty member's grant or have their own outside scholarship to support their training. Research Project Research is the primary focus of the postdoctoral training. For degree applicants, it represents more than half of the required points needed for the degree. Postdocs earning a MA or PhD should follow the research project criteria . Additional Requirements All degree-earning postdocs are expected to participate in the teaching activities of the department and must enroll in four points of teaching experience (G8010) over two semesters. This requirement is typically satisfied by assisting with two courses. In all semesters, students must attend the weekly research seminar (G4099). They may also give a presentation in the seminar or at conference in which their work has been accepted. |
