Presently, under the supervision of Dr. James Cimino, Drs. Kukafka and
Lussier are jointly designing innovative WEB-based educational interventions for the
patient. The MI Heart study (Myocardial Infarct: Health Education and Awareness for
Rapid Treatment) is designed to evaluate an information system-based intervention
aimed at reducing the delay between onset of symptoms of AMI and arrival at a hospital
emergency department. The software-based intervention will be tailored to each
patient by using the best scientific evidence in light of their specific health data and
by deploying customized strategies, such as patient-decision support tools, grounded in
well-established cognitive and behavioral educational models. The principal goal of the
proposed research is to help patients better recognize the occurrence of signs and
symptoms of Acute Myocardial Infarction and consecutively swiftly engage in actions seek
timely treatment to decrease PD-related mortality and morbidity. In order to achieve
experimental validity and plausible population sizes, this trial will be double-blind and
randomized, while its primary population will consist of patients at high risk for AMI,
namely those patients with a prior history of CHD, diabetes mellitus or under dialysis. |
