Research in the department of Biomedical Informatics over the past decade has produced significant information resources for patient care and research at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Together, these resource form a complex Clinical Information System with many components:

Clinical Data Repository - centralized collection of data to facilitate patient care Medical Entities Dictionary - catalog of all medical data elements used in the database Medical Language Processor - program that translates medical reports into coded data in the database Clinical Data Warehouse - centralized collection of data to facilitate clinical research and administration Web-based Clinical Information System (WebCIS) - a user interface that enables clinicians to browse the content of their patients' medical records Clinical Information System Architecture - technologies for combining the many components into a flexible, evolving system to serve the needs of CUMC
